FAQ

Questions

What is online sentiment analysis?

Online sentiment analysis measures what people say in public online conversations about a topic, whether posts are critical, supportive or neutral, and how that mood shifts over time. Public Mood delivers it as a finished analysis for newsrooms.

Is this representative of the public?

No. We measure online sentiment among people who post publicly; it is not an opinion poll or a representative study. Results describe analysed posts, for example "63% of analysed posts were critical", never "63% of people think".

Why is there no margin of error?

A margin of error requires a random sample. Online posts come from people who chose to post, so a margin of error would be misleading. Instead we show how many posts were analysed per platform, the period, and how accurately posts were classified.

Which platforms do you cover?

All platforms are included in every package, and we pick the right mix for each topic: X, Reddit, YouTube, TikTok and Google Trends as the core; Facebook (public pages and public posts only) and Instagram (public comments on public accounts and hashtags); Threads, Bluesky, public Telegram and Discord channels; LinkedIn for business topics; Twitch live chat, when it fits the topic, for minute-by-minute sentiment during live events.

Do you include private groups or messages?

No. We only analyse publicly available content: posts and comments anyone can see without being invited. Private messages, private profiles, closed groups and private channels are never included, on any platform.

How fast do I get my analysis?

Delivered within 3 working days. The 3 working days (Monday to Friday) are counted from when we approve your request, and your customer page shows the expected delivery date.

How far back do you look?

By default we analyse the last 30 days, or from the event onwards. If your question needs a longer view, we can go up to 12 months back. The period is always stated in the analysis.

What does a finished analysis contain?

A clear verdict at the top, big numbers, posts analysed per platform, anonymised quote cards, a timeline, news coverage when relevant, a Sources tab, and a method section with period, counts and caveats. It is delivered as a small password-protected website with its own chatbot, and a PDF is included. Delivered within 3 working days.

Can we publish the results?

You may publish findings from the analysis. Crediting Public Mood is welcome but not required. If you publish, please don't present the results as a poll or as representative of the public. If you publish findings from the free first analysis, please credit Public Mood with a link to publicmood.io. When you cite the results, describe them as online sentiment and give the period, platforms and number of posts analysed, for example: "Online sentiment analysis of 2,060 posts on X, Reddit and YouTube, 13 Jul – 13 Oct 2026 (Public Mood)."

How do you protect people's privacy?

We only analyse publicly available content. Never private messages, private profiles, closed groups or private channels. Private individuals are never named or linked in our analyses. Quotes are anonymised, and in the Sources tab ordinary users only appear as counts per platform and week. We only link to news outlets, organisations, public figures and public communities and channels, never to private individuals. Every customer analysis is private to the customer, behind a password and hidden from search engines. Raw collected posts are deleted 90 days after delivery; only the anonymised results are kept.

How do you anonymise quotes?

We never show usernames of private individuals. Quotes are shown with platform and date only, and only data needed for the analysis is kept.

Is news coverage included?

Yes, when the topic is in the news, at no extra cost. We show headlines, outlet, date, a link and at most a short credited excerpt, never full articles. News coverage covers written online news sources only. It does not include TV, radio, podcasts or print-only editions.

Is this real-time media monitoring?

No. It is an analysis of a defined period, with no alerts. For your own published stories, we send scheduled updates for up to 31 days on where they are picked up, reported as "cited by at least X outlets".

How is Public Mood different from Brand24, Talkwalker or Meltwater?

Those are software platforms you subscribe to and operate yourself. Public Mood delivers a finished analysis with a verdict, written for editors, so there is no dashboard to learn. See our comparison pages for details.

Who can get the first analysis free?

Any business can get the first analysis free, one per email domain. Use your work email, and we review every request personally.

Can I get a PDF?

Yes. A PDF report is included, with the same wording and tone as the report website.

How do you collect the data?

That's our own method. We're happy to talk about what it can show you: platforms, number of posts, period and caveats are always in the method section.

Do you cover Facebook?

Yes, public pages and public posts only. Never private profiles or closed groups. On Facebook, the conversation happens in comment sections under posts, not in one open stream you can follow by topic. That makes it ideal for a focused question: how did commenters on your own page, or on the key pages in your story, react? We bring it in whenever your topic calls for it, or when you ask. We pick the platforms that matter for your topic, all included in the price.

Do you cover Instagram?

Yes. Public comments on public accounts and hashtags. As on Facebook, the conversation happens in comment sections, not in one open stream you can follow by topic, so Instagram is ideal for a focused question: how did commenters on your own account, or on the key accounts in your story, react? We bring it in whenever your topic calls for it, or when you ask. We pick the platforms that matter for your topic, all included in the price.

Do you cover Snapchat?

No. Most of Snapchat is private messages and disappearing stories, so there is very little public conversation to analyse. We only look at public content. If your topic is big on Snapchat, we usually find the same conversation on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.
